p990, osx and usb support
On 20/01/07 at 23:53 cobaltfish wrote:

I've managed to get usb support in os x with the p990. On the blog of Magnus Norlander, a file has been released (the author takes no responsibility for what the file may do etc) But what it does, is lets os x correctly identify the phone as a composite device, rather than just a communications device. I think changes were made to the linux kernel to do this kind of thing also-I noticed comments next to a change in one version.

Again, I take no responsability for what the file may do etc etc.... but it worked for me with my p990

Small update to website

I've made a small update to my website, to prevent people not putting names in when commenting, and also, to email me when comments are made. This way I should keep on top of the spam comments I get from time to time. I also spotted that my listing of blog entries on the side isnt working perfectly either-I had a variable set to the year (when I updated the page code) rather than what the system date is.

New car stereo
On 20/01/07 at 12:10 cobaltfish wrote:

I've finaly replaced my car stereo, from the rubbishy rover one, which only had a tape slot in its favour, as that meant my mp3/minidisk/phone could be plugged in.
I bought a Nikkai USB (theoreticaly) compatable stereo from maplin cos it sounded like what I wanted. However, it didnt work with many of my usb drives-the only one with any decent capacity was my 250GB USB, and that being a normal hardisk in a usb caddy, I doubt would last, even if i got a 12v supply to it. It also has a very bright screen, which was quite tiring to have in the corner of my eyes shining, during night time driving. Seeing as 1/2 my driving is at night, I figured it realy wasnt for me.
So I decided to spend a bit more money, and get a brandname I'd heard of. I got a kenwood KDC-534UA as it had all the functions I need, and also has a red key ilumination, similar to my cars interior lighting!
Once I'd ordered it, I rediscovered how much fun living in a vilage is.... delivery companys realy cant be bothered sometimes in finding the house. City link in particular. I decided to check where it was on monday evening, having been expecting delivery on the friday. turns out that they had attempted to deliver but "Delivery point closed (Carded)". well-there was no card at the house. When I phoned the depot, I mentioned that there had been no card. I was then told that it had been left at the black door, to which I responded "but we dont have a black door"! Anyway, drama aside, I went and collected it during my lunch hour.
The KDC-534UA seems so much better than the nikkai-its less fiddly to press buttons, clearer layout, it has a sensor for if the car lights are on, to dim the display. The usb compatability seems a lot better too-it works with my phone (P990) when its set to have the memory card as a usb disk. It doesnt however work with my creative zen nano. But given that I carry my phone with me anyway, its as useful to be able to plug it in at home/work to change the tunes loaded on it, and in the car to listen to them.

what-another comet
On 11/01/07 at 23:44 cobaltfish wrote:

yep-I spotted another comet. This time without binoculars and lots of searching. I saw the pics that bbc had in their science news, and decided to work out where and when to look. The charts I found were saying for about 30 mins after sunset, only for next couple of days. I checked sunset time for Ipswich, and wandered outside at about 4:44 pm to take a look. And there it was! The comet is called Comet McNaught. I dont have any pics to post. I'm taking a camera to work tomorrow in the hopes its clear and I get a chance to look again.
I managed to point the comet out to a couple of people at work. They were bothe impressed with it.

In other news... work is still keeping me busy-had quite a busy week this week, with anything from hacked servers to failed our isp's dns servers failing and them not being too cooperative-I guess its all part of lifes rich tapestry!
